PUSH FOR PATIENCE AND BRING THE VOTE BACK TO THE RESIDENTS OF FORT LAUDERDALE

PUSH FOR PATIENCE AND BRING THE VOTE BACK TO THE RESIDENTS OF FORT LAUDERDALE

The citizens of Fort Lauderdale bought Bahia Mar nearly 60 years ago to preserve it for public use. For over 50 years, this marina has been home to the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, the largest in-water boat show in the world!

The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show is a major economic driver of $1.79 billion and helps sustain over 149,000 marine industry jobs in the tri-county area.

Rushed plans to approve the development of Bahia Mar are threatening the boat show with potentially several years of ongoing construction.

Don’t let five people decide for the entire community. Keep this land and the decision of what happens to it with the citizens of Fort Lauderdale.

Dear Commissioner,

As a proud citizen of Fort Lauderdale, I am writing to you today regarding the decision currently in your hands about the development plans of Bahia Mar. I am asking you to not only pause before making any hasty decisions approving this plan, but to give the decision back to who should have it, the Fort Lauderdale citizens who call this place home.

For more than 60 years this land has been public land, and a tremendous piece of public land at that. Among its many purposes, it has been home to the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show since the 1970s. This boat show is the lifeblood of our community, creating a massive $1.79 billion annual economic impact to our state and sustains a $12.5 billion industry that supports more than 149,000 jobs.

When people think of Fort Lauderdale, our home, the first thing they think of is the superior marine and boating lifestyle we have. I am afraid that any plans that include construction work for condos or new buildings, puts all of this at risk of being permanently destroyed. I don’t want to imagine a life living in Fort Lauderdale without being surrounded by the boating community and lifestyle. There is a reason Fort Lauderdale is dubbed ‘The Yachting Capital of the World’ and we, as one community, should do all that we can to protect and support this attribute.

So, before you make any decisions, I am asking that you think about the detrimental impact this specific decision will have on our home now, and for generations to come. There is no doubt this is a big decision, and it should be treated with such regard. Keep this land and the decision of what happens to it with the citizens of Fort Lauderdale. Do what is right for our community, the people you represent day in and day out.

Sincerely,

Your Name
